INSIDE PEEK AT JUAREZ, MEXICO

In 2010, Juarez Mexico had the highest murder rate in the world. It continues to be one of the most dangerous places to live, due to the cartel violence associated with the trafficking of drugs and people across the border into the U.S. Opportunities are scarce, and the vast majority of the population survives by working long hours for low pay at the hundreds of factories U.S. companies have set up just below their Southern border to take advantage of the cheaper labor.

THE BEGINNINGS

The history of Sauzal F.C. is really the story of how Big Picture Soccer began. Sauzal F.C., our first club, was formed in 2018 when Josiah (founder of Big Picture Soccer) and his wife were living in a small community in Juarez, Mexico, serving at a children’s home. One day, Josiah went out to play some pick-up soccer and met David (now head coach of Sauzal F.C.) running a small practice for his niece, nephews and a few of their friends. They began talking, and realized that they shared a very similar passion for soccer and the positive impact it can have on a community.

Not long after their initial conversation, Josiah and David were working together to create an all-inclusive soccer club for the children of Juarez, Mexico. The primary goals of the club are to provide an opportunity for the children in Juarez to pursue their dreams no matter their family’s income level, while simultaneously keeping them far away from the ever-present dangers associated with gangs and drugs.

Sauzal FC now has multiple different teams playing in local leagues around the city.

In 2022 they saw their first player sign a professional contract with a top division club within Mexico’s professional soccer league.

The support of sponsors has been indispensable in the creation and sustainability of Sauzal F.C.!

THE IMPACT

Through the positive influence of Sauzal F.C., the vulnerable youth of Juarez are being given a place to belong and thrive away from the violence and gang activity that so often defines their city. It is teaching players it's pillars of respect and hard-work, as well as, lessons like responsibility and teamwork.

Perhaps of even greater value are the friendships formed between families through their involvement with the club. Life in an impoverished area is hard and having friends to support you through the challenges is irreplaceable.

Sauzal F.C. players are also encouraged to participate in other extracurricular activities which are provided in conjunction with another local nonprofit. Some of these activities include guitar lessons, ballet classes, and English classes.

Parents and local government officials have already taken note of the tremendous impact of Sauzal F.C. on the community. In 2019 Sauzal F.C. was formally recognized by local government officials for its work within the community. The township overseer also made an appearance at Sauzal’s end of year Christmas party to specifically address the club and thank the coaches and families for the impact the club is having on the community. During the height of COVID-19 the government actually came to David to help advise their relief efforts within the community.

Juarez, Mexico is not a place naturally characterized by hope, but through Sauzal F.C., we have seen positive change and eyes opened to the potential of a bright future. As many players will emphasize, Sauzal F.C. is much more than just a soccer club; it is a family.

THE COACH

David grew up in the realities of poverty in Juarez and knows what it’s like to be passionate about soccer, have the desire to play for a good club, but be held back by a lack of finances. It is very common for great soccer players to be robbed of the opportunity to advance their career because they can’t afford the expensive fees required to play in clubs where they will get noticed.

David also watched so many of his childhood friends get sucked into the ever-present violence and drug addiction that is prevalent in border cities. He wanted better for his community.

Born out of his experiences, David’s dream was to provide his family and the children of his community with an opportunity that he never had; to be part of an esteemed soccer club with opportunities to advance, whether or not they could pay. He wanted each player to receive the support necessary to pursue their dreams and keep them far away from the dangers associated with Juarez.

We are so grateful to have such a dynamic and passionate coach leading Sauzal F.C.!
